Benefits of Coffee in Type 2 Diabetes Risk Management

Prospective epidemiological studies have shown a positive relationship between habitual coffee consumption and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes (Kolb et al, 2021)

Benefits of Coffee in Preventing Diabetes

Whilst regular caffeine consumption has been shown to impair insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes, coffee also contains polyphenols and minerals such as magnesium and chromium. Multiple independent studies have shown with growing evidence that the consumption of polyphenols, magnesium and chromium contribute to improved insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation, thus reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

A 2009 study noted that consumption of 3 cups of tea or coffee a day lead to a 40% lower risk of type 2 diabetes developing. A separate 2014 study showed that increased coffee consumption of coffee resulted in an 11% decrease in the risk of type 2 diabetes over the next 4 years (Diabetes.co.uk, 2021).

Taking things in moderation

Coffee consumption can assist to lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but it is important to be cautious in the variety of coffee consumed. Lattes and varieties of sweetened coffee are rich in sugars and calories, which would offset the positive effects of coffee. It is therefore important to regulate the type of coffee consumed, take non-sweetened lattes made with skimmed milk or non-sweetened black coffee.
